Consistency in Training, the Key to Results

This article is about the importance of consistency in training, which is fitting as I have not been so consistent getting out a weekly newsletter the last couple of weeks! No excuses…I’m on track now…

Consistency in your training and exercise program is important to maintain a healthy body weight, to keep making gains on your progress and to reduce stress. This being said, when we are training all year round it’s important to make changes to our program on a regular basis and this is where working with a trainer or coach is great. Also, taking a couple of weeks off here and there is OK or a few days if your lifestyle at the time demands it…but after that it’s time to get back on track. If you are one to binge exercise for a few months than drop exercise for the same time or longer then it’s time to make a lifelong commitment to exercise…because you deserve it!
So what stops us from being consistent?
Time: “I’m too busy” is easy for most of us to say in today’s society. So you need to put it in your diary as an important appointment. What your weekly schedule looks like again can be worked out with your trainer, to see what will fit in to your schedule and to find out what is realistic for you and your lifestyle. This may mean making some small changes to fit it in.
Motivation: “I sometimes or always feel unmotivated” is normal, even elite athletes sometimes have a day where they don’t feel like getting out there. This is where having a goal is helpful. But, mostly it’s about talking to yourself into it. Saying things like, “I’ll feel great once it’s done” or “I enjoy exercise once I’m into it”. Joining a group or working out with a friend is also really helpful and a great way to keep you on track for the days in between meeting times.
Confidence: “I’ve never been good at exercise or I’m too overweight to start”. Everyone can be fit! We are all born with different genetics, but like everything in life there is no point in comparing ourselves to others. It is about your improvements, your fitness and the best time to start is now. It’s important to find external support, but mostly it’s about you and learning to be positive towards yourself and your capabilities.
So happy training and get out there!

Maree Millar: 2nd place in the mixed teams division, a great result. And a good chance first if one team mate was ready in transition (he had to go back and get gear at the car when rider came in! ;-)) Maree has had a great year cycling and has become stronger throughout the season, way to go Maree!
Sue Cocks: Came across in 4hrs 56mins (F45-54 245th), only her second year cycling and a few challenging hills in this course. Congratulations Sue, you rock!
Andreas Kacofegitis: Finished in 2hrs 48mins (M35-44 50th), with only a handful or cycles since the Coast to Coast in February he had a great ride. A fabulous course that he’s ready to go back for more next year, good work!
