Foam rollers for improved recovery and posture
Foam Rollers are becoming the new Swiss ball. Easy to have one at home, but they serve a purpose for both exercises as well as for loosening up your muscles. There are various sizes, full long, spine aligner, medium and short. The full long rollers are commonly used in Pilates for core training. Today I’m going to cover a couple of benefits of using the foam roller for releasing tight muscles and tension.
Releasing tension…
The roller is used as a tool that can release tension in the myofascial system (muscle and fascia). This can be caused by many things: stress (chemical, physical, emotional or psychological) impact or trauma, repetitive movement patterns, poor exercise conditioning, poor hydration and diet or bad posture. Regular use of the foam roller will help to improve your posture and is a great way to relax and release tension after sitting at a computer all day.
Recovery after workouts…
Rolling out areas of the body that have been used during a workout will increase the speed of recovery from a workout and help to re-lengthen the used muscles. By using the foam roller for myofascial release we can open up any specific tight areas or main muscles we have just used during our training session. When we exercise we tighten up our muscles and by using a foam roller and/or by stretching we can re-set the muscles to their original starting length.

We carry Obie Foam Rollers at the studio. The reason I brought in the Obie brand of foam rollers into the studio is for a few reasons…
- quality of product (made with denser foam that lasts longer than other rollers on the market)
- locally made in Christchurch
- better for the environment (made with 60% recycled materials and 50% less waste in manufacturing)
- product information (Obie provides exercise sheets and information you can take home)
When you purchase a roller from us we will spend time going over the use of the roller with you.
