Runners Stitch

If you get a stitch when running, then it can make a run uncomfortable and chances are it’s slowing you down. There are a few reasons for getting a stitch while running; too much food/water in the stomach, tight hip flexors/abdominal muscles and shallow, uneven breathing.

So how can you eliminate or reduce your chances of runners stitch?

1) After a meal give yourself 1 ½-3hrs before you run or after fruit 30-60mins, sip water throughout the day, and avoid drinking too much water just before going out.

2) Open up your hip flexors and abdominal muscles. The fascia that is a part of your diaphragm is connected to your abdominals, hip flexors and other muscles in the pelvic region. If these muscles are tight they can cause a bend at the pelvis forward and a pulling on the diaphragm that may cause cramping. Stretching is good, foam rolling and massage of the area is also very effective. So start using that foam roller, or if you don’t have one get one!

3) Uneven breathing.  Ensure you breathe out on opposite foot strikes, if you always breathe out on the same landing foot then this could be the main cause. This ensures we are working both sides of our body evenly when we run…it also encourages a deeper breath into the diaphragm (as shallow breathing could also be the cause).  Happy running!
